Test cricket remains the holy grail of Cricket, one in which every aspect of the game is tested – through and through. That Test cricket makes for a riveting and an even contest between a batsman and a bowler means only elite teams, those who can sustain the pressure for complete five days, get a chance to compete in this format of the game. The ICC makes it a point to vet the performance of a particular team so that they can prove themselves in the longest set-up of the game. Any aspiring test team needs to have a definite domestic competition to churn out good, quality players apart from a regular playing squad. And this begs us to question what criteria needs to be fulfilled by a team in order to get a test status by the ICC. The current system put in place by the ICC is quite comprehensive. Pakistan won the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy. It was their first ever Champions Trophy in a one-sided final affair with their arch rivals India. Pakistan were underdogs going into the final as India had beaten them comprehensively but had their confidence as they had beaten world ranked no.1 team South Africa and knocked out hosts England. Losing the toss and put to bat first, chase masters India thought they had everything under control. The opening pair of Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman put on a huge 128 run stand. Fakhar Zaman scored his maiden ODI ton, making his debut after the loss to India in the opening match. Cameos by Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez made sure Pakistan put up a massive score of 338 with the loss of 4 wickets. India lost Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early within 3 overs with just 6 runs on the board. We are seeing many matches being washed out and using a method to revise targets. The method used to revise the target is called Duckworth-Lewis Method or DL method. What is Duckworth- Lewis method?? Duckworth-Lewis method is a formula used in limited over’s matches which are affected by rain or are temporarily stopped because of any other reason. It uses the over’s reaming and wickets in hand to estimate the total of a team. The traditional method used up to 1997 to revise targets when weather interfered with limited-overs cricket was based on average run-rate. The only advantage of such a system was that it was easy to understand and calculate for all concerned - players, officials and spectators - but it almost always gave a hugely unfair advantage to the team batting second, with the result that captains winning the toss when rain was around almost always chose to field first. From 1997, the ECB adopted the Duckworth/Lewis method as a fairer system, since then
